Extractions

Why might I need a tooth extraction?

There are a variety of reasons why we may recommend a tooth extraction. Some of the most common reasons include a badly broken down tooth due to decay or trauma, the tooth is too wobbly, it may be infected, or to create space for an overcrowded mouth, and in some cases, baby teeth that have yet to fall out when adult teeth erupt.

Is the treatment painful?

The prospect of a tooth extraction can be an intimidating one for many patients. Here at n22dental, we will always put you at ease and make sure you feel informed – we often find amazing care and communication helps patients feel more comfortable.

To ensure your comfort, we’ll administer a local anaesthetic first. This means you won’t feel anything around the area being worked on, but will remain awake and aware for the appointment. If you are very uncomfortable and nervous at the thought of this treatment, we can also provide referral to local sedation and general anaesthetic services.

What happens during the treatment?

Once the local anaesthetic has taken effect, we will gently widen the socket of the tooth being extracted before loosening and carefully removing it. The area being treated will then be thoroughly cleaned and we might have to administer stitches to help the wound heal more effectively.

What should I do to care for it after the treatment?

We will go through all your after-care needs with you at the practice, but we do recommend avoiding hot and cold drinks for a while after receiving this treatment. It is very normal to begin to feel pain at the site once the anaesthetic has worn off, and if this is the case, we recommend taking an over the counter painkiller. Not smoking and keeping the area clean with salt water is highly recommended.
